Conversions API
A conversions API is a server-to-server connection that sends conversion events, such as leads, purchases, or qualified opportunities, from your own systems directly to an advertising platform, instead of relying only on a browser pixel. Meta's Conversions API is the best-known example; Google, TikTok, and LinkedIn offer comparable server-side or offline conversion options.
01why it matters for a business
Ad platforms optimize toward the signals they receive. If all they see is a form submission, they find more people who submit forms, including people who never become customers. Sending downstream events from your CRM, such as qualified, appointment booked, or deal won, lets the platform learn which clicks turned into revenue and shift spend toward similar people. It also recovers signal lost to browser tracking restrictions and ad blockers.
The work is a data integration. Events need identifiers that match ad interactions (often hashed email or phone, or the platform's own lead ID), deduplication with any browser pixel firing the same event, correct timing, and consent handling that matches your privacy obligations. Sending inaccurate events trains the platform on the wrong outcome, which is worse than sending none.
02what it looks like in practice
A home improvement company runs lead ads and gets plenty of form fills, but many leads never answer the phone. It connects its CRM to the ad platform's conversions API so that when a sales rep marks a lead as qualified or an appointment as booked, that event is sent back with the original lead identifier. Over time, campaigns can be optimized toward qualified leads rather than raw form submissions, and the company can see which ads produce appointments, not just clicks.
03common mistakes
- Sending events the CRM does not record reliably, which teaches the platform the wrong outcome.
- Firing the same event from pixel and server without deduplication, which double counts.
- Ignoring consent and privacy rules, especially in healthcare, where sharing data with ad platforms is tightly restricted.
- Sending only the top-of-funnel event when qualified and won events exist in the CRM.
