Answer engine optimization (AEO)
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a website's content so AI assistants and answer features, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, and voice assistants, can find it, understand it, and use it in direct answers. It emphasizes clear question-and-answer content, concise definitions, structured data, and pages machines can read cleanly.
01why it matters for a business
Buyers increasingly ask an AI assistant instead of scrolling search results: which firms build custom AI agents, what a HIPAA-compliant intake system involves, what a fractional CTO costs. The assistant answers directly and may cite a few sources. If your content is not the clearest, most specific answer available, you are absent from that conversation, even if you rank reasonably well in traditional search.
AEO is mostly good communication made machine-readable. Pages answer one question well, put a direct answer near the top, use headings that match how people ask, mark up content with schema.org structured data, and load fast with the content in the HTML rather than hidden behind scripts. None of it guarantees a citation; answer engines choose sources by their own criteria and change them often.
02what it looks like in practice
A commercial roofing contractor's website has a services page that says little beyond quality and experience. It adds pages answering the questions property managers actually ask: how long a flat roof replacement takes, what affects cost, what an inspection includes, how warranty types compare. Each page opens with a two-sentence answer, includes FAQ markup and specifics from the company's own work, and links to related answers. The content is useful to a person and easy for an AI system to quote.
03common mistakes
- Writing thin pages stuffed with question phrases. Answer engines favor substance and specificity.
- Hiding content behind client-side scripts that crawlers may not render.
- Inventing statistics to look authoritative. They damage trust and can be repeated back wrongly.
- Accidentally blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt, then wondering why you are never cited.
