Claude
Claude is a family of large language models made by Anthropic, available through the Claude apps, an API, and major cloud platforms including Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI. The family comes in tiers (Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku) that trade capability against speed and cost. Businesses use Claude for writing, analysis, coding, and agents.
01why it matters for a business
Claude is one of a small number of frontier model families businesses choose between, alongside OpenAI's GPT models and Google's Gemini. It has a strong reputation for long-document work, careful instruction following, and coding, and Anthropic's tooling around it, including Claude Code and the Model Context Protocol, has made it a common choice for agent and developer workflows.
For an executive, the decision is less about which model is best in general and more about fit: which model does your specific work best at an acceptable cost, under data terms your compliance team accepts, through a channel your IT team can govern. Access through your existing cloud provider can simplify procurement, security review, and billing. Testing on your own tasks beats any published leaderboard.
02what it looks like in practice
A professional services firm rolls out Claude in two ways. Staff get a managed team workspace for drafting, analysis, and research, with shared projects holding approved reference material and admin controls run by IT. Separately, the firm's developers use the API through its cloud provider to build an internal tool that drafts engagement letters from intake data, with a cheaper tier handling classification and a more capable tier handling drafting. Usage, cost, and access are governed in one place.
03common mistakes
- Rolling out seats without training. Teams get far more from any model when they learn how to brief it and check its work.
- Defaulting to the most capable tier for every task. Match the tier to the job.
- Locking an application to one vendor's model. Keep model choice behind your own interface.
- Skipping the data review. Confirm retention and training terms for the specific plan or channel you use.
