Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It works in a developer's terminal, editor, or browser, reads an existing codebase, plans changes, edits files, runs commands and tests, and can prepare commits, asking permission for actions according to its settings. It connects to other tools through the Model Context Protocol and can be scripted into automated workflows.
01why it matters for a business
Tools like Claude Code change the economics of software work. A small senior team can cover ground that used to take a larger one, because the agent handles much of the reading, boilerplate, refactoring, test writing, and investigation while engineers direct and review. This is what Insomnia Club means by AI-augmented development; on Pinned Golf, AI tooling threaded through the engineering process reduced the engineering need from five engineers to one.
The leverage comes with responsibilities. The agent works with the access you give it, so permissions, secrets handling, and review discipline matter. Output quality depends on the codebase itself: a repository with clear conventions, a project instructions file, and good test coverage gets much better results than one without. And someone accountable still has to review what ships.
02what it looks like in practice
A company's internal operations platform has years of accumulated code and few tests. The team uses Claude Code first to write characterization tests around critical billing logic, then to refactor that logic in small reviewed steps, running the tests after each change. Project instructions in the repository describe conventions, commands, and areas that must not be touched without sign-off. Engineers review every pull request; the agent does the repetitive work at a pace a single engineer could not.
03common mistakes
- Giving the agent broad permissions in production environments, or access to secrets it does not need.
- Skipping review because a change looks right. Read the diff and run the tests.
- No project instructions. A short file describing conventions and commands improves results considerably.
- Measuring lines of code written instead of reviewed, working changes shipped.

- AI coding agentAn AI coding agent is an AI system that performs software engineering tasks with some autonomy: reading a codebase, writing and changing code, running tests, fixing failures, and opening changes for review.
- Vibe codingVibe coding is building software by describing what you want to an AI tool in plain language and accepting the code it generates, largely without reading or understanding that code.
- Model Context Protocol (MCP)The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic in 2024, for connecting AI applications to external tools and data.
- Technical debtTechnical debt is the future cost created when software is built in a faster or easier way instead of a sounder one: shortcuts, missing tests, outdated dependencies, tangled code, and undocumented decisions.
- ClaudeClaude is a family of large language models made by Anthropic, available through the Claude apps, an API, and major cloud platforms including Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI.
